A group show

Over 40 artists responded to an open call out for work, last month: ‘No theme. Not curated. Everything that arrives will hang’. And it is a massive show.
‘All In’ provides an insight into the creative pulse alive and well in Toowoomba, and the variety that lends itself to.

Official Opening: 7pm - 9pm FRI, May 17
‘All In’ is on show from WED, May 15 - June 05.
GALLERY HOURS: 10am - 5pm Tuesday - Friday weekly
+ weekends by appointment or special event.

It’s time for a group show. Our only one for the year.

The local scene has been pumping these past 12 months and with a lack of group shows it’s time to see what’s been doing elsewhere.

The last one we had was about this time last year and we miss the vibrancy, surprises and introductions group shows bring.

‘All in’ is literally that: non-themed and not curated, we want to show the works that you’ve been noodling away on. As is.

Bring your works into the gallery by 5pm TUESDAY, MAY 7

‘All in’ will open 7pm, FRIDAY May 10

Details:

Works of any media will be accepted

There is no limit on the amount of work you submit

Entry fee is $20 for the first work and $5 for each work thereafter - ( should you choose to submit more than one).

Commission is 20% on sales

What you get:

A month-long showing

Gallery representation for that time

Five-day a-week exhibition exposure

Plus the usual networking and collaboration offshoot possibilities.

The Story’: a three-day exhibition.
FRI, March 29 - SUN, March 31

Introducing the works of Gold Coast photographer Craig Tuffin + Sunshine Coast painter Froyle Neideck.
Tuffin creates striking portraits using the historic medium of wet plate collodion.

Collodion images take time…time to prepare and time to produce. Because the sitters often spend 5 to 10 seconds posing for a portrait, they seem embedded in time. Things move and time passes, with all of it frozen forever on a glass plate.

Craig explains “I find that using this method allows me to embrace imperfection as an integral part of the artistic process. The unchangeable artifacts that appear on each plate as evidence of the technique, are particular to that moment in time, and become entwined in the very essence of each image.”

Froyle Neideck explores textures, colour and sound through her sound/ art installations. Her works will be presented with accompanying music created from and for her works.

EXPLORING the DRAWING experience

Four-part, adult art workshop series focussing on the act of drawing and detailing various skills + techniques to extend your practice.

Daytime and nighttime workshop sessions offered, starting Tuesday March 26

Join visual arts teacher of 34 years, John Archibald, as you explore what happens to you in the act of drawing.

From looking, to seeing and responding.
From observation to perception and expression.

” Exploring the drawing experience” is a four-part series, spread out over the course of weekly, two hour sessions and
suitable for all levels of experience.

“A drawing is not something you make, it’s something you experience…”

* Session one: The difference between the Subjective and Objective disappears in the act of drawing:
Experience/ gesture, mark making and emotion.

*Session 2: Organising marks: line, shape, figure, ground, structure, organisation space, shape and volume

*Session 3: Light and dark: Expressive line, value and texture

*Session 4: Envisioned images: imagination, improvisation, expression, construction

” Anyone can draw, if they can make a mark,” John Archibald. Beginners and accomplished artists welcome, John will start with you where you’re at.

COST: $25 per session or $80 for the series

BRING: Whatever collection of drawing material you have: pens, biros, pencils, water soluble pens,kneadable eraser, brush, ink, nail polish - anything that makes a mark on paper. Some materials will be available for use during the sessions as well.

Thanks to everyone that made it out to our recent exhibition opening, Bronte Naylor + Alison Mooney’s Lost & Found (in my head).

We had a great turnout and Byron Bay-based funk threepiece, Quazi-Smith finished the night off with some massive bass with the lights out.

Brisbane-based street artist, Lucks also opened his show ‘A Man’s Cans’ on Kontraband’s wall (our neighbours on theGRID). It’s a sweet show exploring mixed media still lifes of Lucks’ favourite cans he’s accumulated over the years.

Both shows are still up for a couple of weeks so come on up and check them out.

While you’re in the area, duck into Searle’s Walk - laneway diagonally opposite theGRID (our home) - and check out more of Kontraband’s awesome in the shape of a patchwork mural featuring the skills of about seven local street artists. Sharp.

MARS installation cube created live for Family Day outside Grand Central in late October.

Artists Dale Mundi, Jesse Wright, Jason Parasyn and Alison Mooney painted to the theme of ’family’ over four hours.

It was fun. The council now owns this pretty beast, built by Jesse Wright.

MARS resident Dale Mundi opens his solo show THIS Friday night in our gallery on theGRID.

Dale’s been working on this show over the past four months in the shared artist studio onsite at theGRID. It’s been really interesting watch his focus shift and evolve from particular elements to others.

And one exciting aspect is how most of those elements are represented in some way or another in this show.

Above is the RGB Colorspace Atlas by American artist Tauba Auerbach. An 8x8 hardcover tome that pretty much serves as an encyclopedia of every color in the RGB index. The special binding was co-designed by the artist herself in collaboration with Daniel E. Kelm, and were printed at wide awake garage, an independent bookbinder, with help from Leah Hughes. The Marilyn Monroe of books.

MARS artists Dale Mundi, Margo Isaac, Alison Mooney and 2011 resident Jesse Wright painted in a big window as part of Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers.

They ended up doing a whole bunch of x-rays of kids who pressed themselves against the glass - among other great works.

Duck past Lincraft on the corner of Margaret and Ruthven Streets to have a look.

Back in the box next Sunday, Sept 30. 11am - 2pm

MARS International Art Swap Exhibition is up in the gallery now.
We opened the show, which features 20 International artists and 20 Locals on Friday, Sept 21 to a solid turn out.

Big thanks to RADF for financially supporting this project, Germany’s Artwork Exchange for being art-collecting partners, guest curators Ashleigh Bunter + Grace Dewar and of course… the talented artists.

Show’s up until October 15 and definitely worth a look - the locals stand up against the stellar works of the internationals.
